Kogi Lassa fever victim contracted disease in Ondo – Expert

Dr Jones Taiwo, the Head of Clinical Services (HCS) of Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Lokoja, said the late Aisha Jimoh, who died of Lassa fever, might have contracted the disease in Owo, Ondo State. Taiwo told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Lokoja that Aisha was in Owo two weeks earlier and took ill as soon as she returned to be with her brother in Gadumo, Lokoja. He said that the first case they earlier had at FMC Lokoja in April was also from Owo area and confirmed positive to Lassa Fever at Irua Specialist Hospital, Edo State, but the patient died within 12 hours. “The boy from Kogi Central, who lived in Owo and was preparing for NYSC Orientation Camp, suddenly had fever in Owo and came to Okene where he was brought to FMC Lokoja. “But the situation was very bad when he came and the samples were collected and sent to Edo State where it was confirmed positive. “But it was unfortunate that the patient died within 12 hours. “The teenage female patient that died ...

Gov. Akeredolu blames dwindling federal allocations for unpaid arrears

The Ondo State Governor, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, has said that lecturers of the state-owned polytechnic, Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, RUGIPO, went on strike without a formal notice to the state government. He also said the poor funding of the institution and other government agencies was due to the shortfalls in the allocation from the federation account. The governor spoke on Wednesday in Akure while receiving students of the polytechnic who held a peaceful protest at his office while seeking a quick resolution of the industrial dispute. Mr. Akeredolu said he had called the leadership of Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, ASUP, for a meeting with a view to resolving the problem. According to him, what comes from the federal government is not enough to pay workers salaries and subventions to government agencies and institutions. Akeredolu cancels mass promotion of teachers in Ondo

Governor Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State has cancelled mass promotion of primary and secondary school teachers in the state. He stated that henceforth, any teacher that was not qualified for promotion would not be promoted. Akeredolu spoke when the state executive of the All Nigeria Conference of Principals of Secondary Schools paid him a courtesy visit in his office in Akure, the state capital. He said, “As a government policy, we will no longer mass-promote teachers. It is an executive order. Whoever is not qualified will not be promoted. “We are going to have an education summit. It has always been in the offing. FUNAAB releases cut-off marks for 2017/2018 admission exercise

The Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), Ogun State, has released cut-off marks for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) for candidates, who made FUNAAB their first choice institution, for the 2017/2018 Academic Session, following the recent policy meeting, chaired by the Honourable Minister of Education. The University operates a Dual Cut-Off Point System for its agricultural programmes, which is fixed at 180 marks, while courses in Engineering, Sciences and Veterinary Medicine programmes are pegged at 200 marks. In other words, only candidates, who scored 180 and above for the agricultural programmes, as well as those who made 200 and above in Engineering, Sciences and Veterinary Medicine programmes are eligible to take part in the forthcoming Post-UTME Screening Exercise.
